CHAPTER 16

The ride home from the bar passes largely in silence, save for Drew’s thumbs tapping out an unfamiliar beat on the steering wheel. Hunter gazes blankly out the window and remembers his last trip from Sunnyvale to Menlo. The familiarity of the heavy quiet is almost crushing. He wonders how many beatings his heart can take before it bleeds out.

As expected, Drew is the first to break the peace. “Hunter, I – I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have sprung that on you. I – it wasn’t fair to you or Griff.”

Hunter grunts, but refuses to face Drew or otherwise acknowledge his apology.

“If it helps,” Drew continues mildly, “Griff didn’t know you would be there either.”

Now Hunter explodes. “Why on earth would that help? How could you think that would make any material difference? Should I feel better knowing only you who would subject me to that indignity? To know it was merely my best friend and not my former lover who went out of his way to humiliate me?”

Drew clears his throat, but Hunter rolls right over him. “Oh, shut up. Yes, fine, I admit it. Griff and I had a… fling . I’m sure you figured it out as soon as Griff left.”

Drew takes a deep breath, surprised by the intensity of Hunter’s outburst. “Yeah. You’re right. I did know something happened. But neither you nor Griff would tell me shit! You were like best friends, and you’re both my best friends, and now you both act like the other one doesn’t exist. And neither of you will talk to me about it! You want to pretend like nothing happened, fine! Well, if nothing happened, why can’t we all go back to being friends and hanging out together?”

Hunter shrugs defeatedly. He’s too tired and Drew is too stubborn. “You’re right. Griff asked me not to tell you about what happened, but you were inevitably going to be caught in the middle, and it isn’t fair to you. I’m sorry. But, Drew, I can’t – please don’t do this again. I can’t, I just can’t. It – I know it’s been years, and we’re grown men and it shouldn’t matter, but… it hurts, Drew. It hurts that his happiness is other people when I – I don’t know what I did wrong. I don’t know why I didn’t even get a chance to…” He trails off.

Drew glances over at Hunter as they pull into the driveway. He parks the car and turns to his friend before either can exit the vehicle. “Hunter. You don’t have to tell me what happened. But you haven’t been the same since Griff left. Griff and I haven’t been as close lately either, but when he came back… I took one look at him and I could see he’s been hurting too. Sure, he’s been through a lot of trauma and huge changes lately, with Mel and Dad dying and moving home with Amelia, and starting the shop. But it’s more than that. It’s like… something’s missing.
